Planting Spinach

Planting Spinach in the Garden

Spinach is a cool season crop that in temperate climates can be grown year round, and even in cooler climates, spinach can survive hard frosts. When planting in the spring, spinach can be planted as early as the soil is able to be dug. Spinach seed can then be planted through mid spring. Spinach can then be planted again in late summer for a fall spinach harvest. Sow twelve to fifteen spinach seeds per foot one half inch deep. When the spinach plants are one inch tall, thin to two to four inches between each plant. Place rows twelve to fifteen inches apart.

Be sure to include a heavy amount of compost or manure into the soil when planting. Keep the spinach seed moist but not wet until established. Spinach just needs healthy well drained soil for the most part to thrive, though an additional side dressing of compost can be applied if the spinach is slow growing or a light green in color.
